Thank you for joining us for this year’s Shero Awards!
Each year we celebrate incredible, change-making women in our community. Past Shero award recipients have been civil rights lawyers, legislators, social justice organizers, entrepreneurs, scientists, and more.
And this year we celebrated some incredible women.
Meet our 2025 Sheros
Nominated by members of the community, and selected by our Board, we’re thrilled to introduce three powerful, courageous, change-making women:
Celeste Mergens
Founder, Days for Girls
Celeste Mergens is a bestselling author and founder of the global award-winning organization Days for Girls, which has reached more than 3.5 million women and girls in 145 countries, shattering stigma, shame, and taboos and turning periods into pathways of healing, new growth, and opportunity. She has been featured in Oprah’s O Magazine, Forbes, and Stanford Social Innovation Review. She was awarded the AARP Purpose Prize, Conscious Company Global Impact Entrepreneur Top Ten Women, and Women's Economic Forum's Woman of the Decade. She is a sought-after speaker and business consultant and is happily married to her best friend of over 40 years, Don Mergens. They have six children and live in the Pacific Northwest.
Justice Mary I. Yu
WA State Supreme Court
Mary I. Yu was appointed to the Washington Supreme Court in 2014 after serving 14 years as a trial court judge in King County Superior Court. She was elected to a full term in 2016 and again in 2022. Justice Yu earned a B.A. degree in Theology from Dominican University, a M.A. degree in Religious Studies from Mundelein of Loyola University and her J.D. degree from the University of Notre Dame.
The daughter of immigrants and the first in her family to go to college, Justice Yu is the first woman of color (first Asian and first Latina) and the first member of the LGBTQ community to serve on the Washington State Supreme Court. A frequent speaker for legal education seminars, Justice Yu is also active in a variety of community and professional activities.
State Representative Janice Zahn,
41st Legislative District
Representative Janice Zahn serves in the State Legislature representing the 41st District (Mercer Island, Bellevue and the surrounding areas on the eastside) and works as the Chief Engineer for the Port of Seattle. Appointed to the Legislature in January, 2025, Janice previously served on the Bellevue City Council for 7 years. Janice actively helps others, to engage, grow and prosper. Among her many volunteer and leadership roles, she’s been involved in her school district PTA, as a Girl Scout leader for over 10 years, and volunteered with local organizations committed to children and families, homelessness and food insecurity. She served for four years on The Sophia Way board serving women experiencing homelessness and Nourishing Networks.
Rise Up NOW! is our biggest fundraiser of the year, and these funds help us keep up the fight. NOW is a grassroots, all-volunteer organization that has been leading the charge on women’s equality for over fifty years. We fight at the state legislature for legal protections for women and girls; host panels, film-screenings and educational events; partner with other groups to support important causes both here at home and elsewhere, and so much more. Our Past Shero Recipients
New this year!
This event is always centered on uplifting women in our local community and building power together, and we’re excited to introduce a new way of doing that this year: The Maker’s Uprising- a feminist vendor market.
This market will feature a dozen local women crafters, artisans, and small business owners and will be open from 6 - 830pm. The Rise Up program will run roughly 7:15 - 7:45.
